Important Facts: Privileges and Benefits of Senior Citizen That You May Not Aware Of

According to the 2010 census, senior citizens or those aged 60 years old and over comprise 6.8% of our total population.

In 1994, former president Fidel Ramos declared the first week of October as Linggo ng Katandaang Filipino (Elderly Filipino Week) through Proclamation No. 470.)

Every year, the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD), with other government agencies, local government units (LGUs) and nongovernment organizations (NGOs), lead the celebration of Elderly Filipino Week. This is to emphasize the important role of older persons in nation-building, and to raise and address issues concerning the sector.

Based on the 2010 census, about 7 million – aged 60 years old and over –comprise our population. They are provided with benefits and privileges through the following legislation:

Republic Act No. 7432, or the Expanded Senior Citizens Act of 2003

RA 9994, an amendment to RA 7432 to include additional services

RA 10645, an amendment to RA 9994 to provide mandatory PhilHealth coverage for all senior citizens.

In order to avail mentioned privileges and benefits below. Senior Citizens must have valid senior citizens ID. Here are the requirements, qualification and how to apply:

Qualifications
• Must be a Filipino citizen who is a resident of the Philippines
• Must be 60 years old or above
• Dual citizenship can also apply provided that they prove their Filipino citizenship and have at least six months residency in the Philippines

Requirements
• Birth Certificate
• Latest 1 x 1 colored photo
• Valid ID
• How To Apply for Senior Citizen ID?

Bring all the requirements to the City or Municipal’s Office of the Senior Citizens Affair (OSCA) where you reside and apply for an ID. You can ask someone from your family to accompany you.

After giving the requirements to the staff, they will fill up the card with your personal info, all you have to do is to sign the card, make sure your signature is the same to the other ID’s you use.

Through years of upgrading and expanding services, here’s a list of benefits and privileges our elderly are entitled to:

List of Senior Citizen Discounts and VAT Exemptions

• Medicines: Generic and branded medicines, vitamins, and mineral supplements (with doctor’s prescription)
• Medical supplies and equipment: Hearing aids, eyeglasses, wheelchairs, crutches, dentures, etc.
• Medical and dental services in private facilities: Lab tests such as blood tests, X-rays, etc.
• Professional fees of attending physicians and licensed health workers
• Domestic air and sea travel fares
• Public land transportation fares: Jeepneys, buses, taxis, shuttle services, MRT, LRT, PNR, etc.
• Hotels: Accommodation and amenities in hotels, beach resorts, mountain resorts, etc.
• Restaurants: Food, beverages, dessert, and other consumables for dine-in, take-out, drive-thru, and delivery orders
• Recreation centers: Rental and other fees for sports facilities such as gyms, badminton courts, tennis courts, ballroom dancing studios, bowling lanes, etc.
• Places of leisure: Cinemas, museums, parks, theaters, concert halls, etc.
• Funeral and burial services for deceased senior citizens: hospital morgue, embalming, casket or urn, cremation, etc.

Note: 20% senior citizen discount and exempted from the value-added tax (VAT) on applicable goods and services for their exclusive use. These privileges apply to both cash and credit card payments.
