Here Are The Dangerous Effect To Your Body If You Eat Too Much Salt

Did you know that 95 percent of the sodium you eat is absorbed into your body? Even if you don't frequently overdo it on the salt, it still has the potential for negative impact.

A study from the Center for Disease Control showed that 90 percent of Americans eat too much salt, and the average adult has an average daily intake of 3,592 mg.

Over time, your kidneys have trouble keeping up with excess sodium, so your body holds onto water to dilute it (hence why you might feel bloated and puffy).

This process increases the fluid around the cells and the volume of blood in your body. Increased blood volume means that your heart has to work extra hard — over time, this could lead to high blood pressure, heart attack, and stroke.

Cooking Light's Nutrition Director, Brierley Horton, MS, RD, says, "Overdoing it on sodium can easily happen when you're consuming prepackaged foods or eating out at restaurants, especially if you have a salt sensitivity. The best thing you can do is listen to your body."

Here are some signals that you may consume a lot of salt that you should to be aware of, and it could be prevented:

YOUR THRIST IS RAGING

Foods with high amount of sodium (think: chips, spaghetti sauce, and pepperoni pizza) make you feel thirstier, because sodium messes with the balance of fluid in your body. If you had a day of eating more high-sodium food, like at a baseball game, try to drink a lot of water. Your body is probably craving water, so it can restore the salt balance in your cells.

Sodium plays a starring role in helping our bodies balance fluid. “We need some salt intake each day to help maintain water balance in the body,” says Enright. “The sodium found in salt helps to keep fluid inside our cells.” When you’re thirsty, Enright says, your body is telling you that there's not enough water to support how much sodium is in your system, so it sends a signal to your brain to drink up.

FREQUENT URINATION

Did you know that excessive urine as 2.5 or more liters per day? Your body processes salt through your kidneys. When you consume too much sodium, your kidneys process and excrete the excess through urine production. Excessive thirst is a common response to eating salty foods. An increase in fluid consumption leads to an increase in urine production.

PERSISTENT HEADACHE

The researchers aren’t exactly sure how sodium causes headaches. But when you take in too much of the nutrient, the volume of your blood likely increases, says study author Lawrence Appel, M.D., M.P.H.

As a result, your blood takes up more space in your blood vessels, which then have to expand a bit to accommodate the extra bulk. And that expansion—and subsequent contraction—of the blood vessels is what can trigger headaches.

EXPERIENCING BRAIN FOG

Many things can cause cognitive impairment, including excess salt. One study published in the Neurobiology of Aging in 2011 found that older people who consumed high amounts of salt and led a sedentary lifestyle had more cognitive decline. Brain fog is usually a sign of inflammation, which can be caused by excess salt. Also, people who consume a lot of salt usually don’t drink enough water, and dehydration can cause cognitive disturbances as well.

HOW TO REDUCE YOUR SODIUM INTAKE

-If you sprinkle your food with salt before tasting it, you've already found one sure-fire way to reduce your sodium intake. The American Heart Association recommends other ways to add flavor to your meals before they even hit the dinner table.

-Compare labels at the store for sodium content. The same type of food made by different companies can contain drastically different amounts of sodium.

-Choose low-sodium varieties of store-bought canned and packaged food, and especially soup, pasta sauces and canned vegetables, which tend to be loaded with sodium. -Rinse canned beans and vegetables to reduce their sodium levels by as much as 40 percent. Experiment with slow-cooking methods such as braising and sauteing to heighten the natural flavor in food.

-Replace salt called for in recipes with garlic, herbs and spices.
