Fatty Liver Disease: Best Natural Remedies For Treating Fatty Liver

Fatty liver, or hepatic steatosis or simple steatosis, is a reversible condition wherein large vacuoles of triglyceride fat accumulate in liver cells via the process of steatosis (i.e., abnormal retention of lipids within a cell).

Despite having multiple causes, fatty liver can be considered a single disease that occurs worldwide in those with excessive alcohol intake and the obese (with or without effects of insulin resistance).

The condition is also associated with other diseases that influence fat metabolism. When this process of fat metabolism is disrupted, the fat can accumulate in the liver in excessive amounts, thus resulting in a fatty liver.

It is difficult to distinguish alcoholic FLD, which is part of alcoholic liver disease, from nonalcoholic FLD (NAFLD), and both show microvesicular and macrovesicular fatty changes at different stages.

The accumulation of fat in alcoholic or non-alcoholic steatosis may also be accompanied by a progressive inflammation of the liver (hepatitis), called steatohepatitis. This more severe condition may be termed either alcoholic steatohepatitis or non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH).

About 12 to 25% of people in the United States have NAFLD, while NASH affects between 2 and 5% of people in the United States. The annual economic burden was estimated at US$103 billion in the USA in 2016.

Liver specialist Elliot B. Tapper, M.D., says he's witnessed the disturbing shift in demographics among the patients with liver failure he treats at Michigan Medicine. National data collected by Tapper and study co-author Neehar Parikh, M.D., M.S., confirms that in communities across the country more young people are drinking themselves to death.

"Each alcohol-related death means decades of lost life, broken families and lost economic productivity," says Tapper, a member of the University of Michigan Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology and health services researcher at the U-M Institute for Healthcare Policy and Innovation.

Low-glycemic Diet

The glycemic index, or GI, measures how a carbohydrate-containing food raises blood glucose. Foods are ranked based on how they compare to a reference food — either glucose or white bread.
A food with a high GI raises blood glucose more than a food with a medium or low GI.

Physical inactivity is related to the severity of fatty liver disease irrespective of body weight, supporting the hypothesis that increasing physical activity through exercise can improve fatty liver disease. Several clinical trials have shown that both aerobic and resistance exercise reduce the hepatic fat content.

Flax seeds

According to the Flax Council of Canada, flaxseed was cultivated in Babylon as early as 3000 BC. Dandelion helps to detoxify the liver and promote increased bile production, says Andrew Chevallier in his book, "Encyclopedia of Herbal Medicine." In the folk medicine of many countries, dandelion is used as a liver tonic to stimulate a sluggish or congested liver.

The recommended dose for dried root is 2 grams to 8 grams three times daily, according to the NYU Langone Medical Center. Add 1/2 cup fresh leaves to salads, or eat dandelion leaves cooked as vegetables. Dandelion is considered to be safe when used according to directions. Consult your health practitioner before starting treatment with dandelion to ensure it is the right herb for your condition.


Cilantro might help maintain liver function by protecting your liver cells from toxins. An animal study, published in "Toxicology and Industrial Health" in 2012, found that rats fed cilantro were less likely to suffer liver damage from exposure to toxins than those that did not eat cilantro. The study also found that cilantro leaves have a high concentration of polyphenols, the family of compounds thought to be responsible for cilantro's beneficial effect. While it is not yet known how effectively cilantro can protect your liver from damage, adding the herb to your diet might offer some benefit.

Amla or indian goose berries

Antioxidants present in this wonder fruit help clearing toxins from the body (liver is the site where toxins are found in excess amount) and protecting liver from resulting damage.

Amla is also used in the treatment of liver cirrhosis, rehabilitation of alcoholics with severe liver damage and people suffering from hepatitis. Silybum marianum, commonly known as milk thistle (MT) (family Asteraceae/Compositae) is one of the oldest and most extensively studied plants in the treatment of liver diseases. This plant grows as a stout thistle in rocky soils, generating large purple flowering heads. Its leaves are characterized by milky veins, from which the plant derives its name (7). MT was used by ancient physicians and herbalists to treat liver and gallbladder disorders, including hepatitis, cirrhosis, and jaundice, and to protect the liver against poisoning from chemical and environmental toxins, including snake bites, insect stings, mushroom poisoning, and alcohol.

Licorice root

Curcumin activates apoptosis (programmed cell death) in the liver stellate cells that cause liver fibrosis.

Curcumin stimulates bile production and flow, helping to metabolize and eliminate fat.
