The Best And Worst Sleeping Position For Your Health

Getting enough quality sleep at the right times helps you function well throughout the day. People who are sleep deficient are less productive at work and school.

A comfortable sleeping position contributes on how good your sleep will be. Thus, your sleeping position may affect your general health.

But did you know that there's a best and worst position recommended for you? Read on to know more about this.

* Best Sleeping Position – on Your Side

Many consider this position to be the healthiest. Sleeping on your side provide the following benefits:

- helps to keep your airways open and matches the natural curve of the spine.
- reduces stress on the hips.
- can relieve heartburn.
- improves blood circulation especially for pregnant women.
- prevents body weight in pushing your liver.

* Better Sleeping Position – on Your Back

While sleeping on your back is better than sleeping on your stomach it still has its drawbacks.

- you will be prone to sleep apnea, a life-threatening sleep disorder.
- can also cause your tongue to fall inwards which can block the breathing tube.
- not recommended for pregnant women since the weight of the uterus presses on the spine, back muscles, and major blood vessels, which can decrease blood flow around your body and to your baby.

* The Worst Sleeping Position – on Your Stomach

This position can be hard on your back and neck and makes it difficult to maintain a natural curve of your spine. It can put pressure on your joints and muscles which can lead to pain, numbness, and tingling.

If you can’t sleep any other way, reduce the strain on your back by placing a pillow under your pelvis and lower abdomen.

Experimenting with different sleep positions won’t do any harm, so feel free to try each position for a few nights and see which is the best fit. Unless a doctor specifically recommends switching, it’s probably best to keep doing what feels right. 4
